Revised Content:
In spring, the awakening of the pond is marked by the vibrant presence of Caltha palustris, or the Marsh Marigold. This rhizomatous herbaceous perennial boasts clusters of brilliant yellow flowers, each measuring up to 2 inches (5 cm) and resembling the charming buttercup. Blooming from mid-spring to early summer, the flowers emerge atop succulent, heart or kidney-shaped leaves that are a rich green in color. As the plant grows, the leaves become gradually smaller in size.
Once the blossoms fade, they give way to seed pods that split open when ripe, scattering the seeds within. This harbinger of spring is one of the first marginal plants to bloom, heralding the arrival of the new season. The flower buds can be cooked and pickled in vinegar, serving as a substitute for capers.
While the leaves are sometimes used as potherbs, they require multiple brief boilings to remove the poisonous elements and should not be consumed raw.
HARDINESS ZONE: 3-7
GROW: Direct sow the seeds in the fall or early spring, planting them 1/4 inch below the surface. Alternatively, start the seeds indoors by sowing them 1/4 inch deep in individual pots or a flat. Maintain even moisture and a temperature of 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit until germination, which typically occurs within 5-10 days.
WHEN TO PLANT: Fall or early spring
TALL: The Marsh Marigold can grow up to 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) in height and width.
NOTE: As mentioned, the leaves should not be consumed raw, as they contain poisonous elements. Several short boilings are required to remove these toxins before using the leaves as potherbs.
